Egy nő elzavarja szingli, terhes lányát, majd feuvenetes leckét kap a hitről és az együttérzésről.
Olivia Douglas szívesen látta önmagát egy jótékony, jóéletű nőként. Szeretett férjének, Davidnak a halála után 14 évvel mélyen vallásossá vált.
David elvesztése után mély depresszióba esett, majd a hit a szeretet hozta őt vissza a szakadék széléről, ami életének tragédiáját ábrázolta: 28 évesen egyedül hagyta hátra kislányát.
Olivia teljes figyelmét rá koncentrálta Istennöre és lányára, Sandra-ra. Az életét is odaadta volna kislányaért.
Apja elvesztése után Sandra kényeztetett és óvott gyermekként nőtt fel. Amíg öt éves nem lett és el nem kezdett iskolába járni, a lába alig érintette a földet.
Számára mindig ott lógtak a gondozók, akiket arra utasítottak, hogy minden veszélytől óvják meg. Ahogy nőtt, egyre hosszabb lett az a listája, amely tartalmazta azokat a dolgokat, amit nem szabad csinálnia.
Az idő eljött, s Sandra tinédzser lett. Nem tarthatta társaságban a barátait, nem mehetett moziba, nem tarthatott pizsamapartikat és nem barátkozhatott azokkal, akik nem jártak anyja egyházába.
Olivia nővére, Linda gyakran számon kérte Olivia-t a szigorú magatartásáért. „Minél szorosabban fogod a gyeplőt, annál valószínűbb, hogy a ló megszökik.” – figyelmezett Linda.
De Oliva kitartott erősen. “Linda, neked van két gyereked. Arra kérlek, törődj a saját gyerekeiddel és hagyj engem, hogy én vezethessem a lányom életét, ahogy jónak látom.” – válaszolta.
Mikor Sandra betöltötte a 17. évét, fellázadt anyja szigorúsága ellen, a következmény pedig katasztrófális volt. A védtelen, ártatlan lányt magába bolondította egy “rosszfiú”, s az, ami elkerülhetetlen volt, bekövetkezett.
“Olivia, amikor a síró lány az anyja karjai közé ment, Oliver csak odakiáltott: “Mi az? Terhes vagy?”
Trembling and crying, Sandra nodded. “Yes”, she whispered.
“You have sinned! How could you go to church knowing what you were doing?! Shameful!” Olivia shouted.
“Please, mom…”, Sandra sobbed. “I am so scared…”
“You should be!”, Olivia replied. “I was still a virgin when I had you with your dad. You hear me? I was CLEAN! And you? Just seventeen years old and already a disgrace! Get out of my house! OUT!”
“Mom…” Sandra sobbed. “I don’t understand…”
“I am disgusted with you! Leave my house, go and give birth to this vile child somewhere else! You are cut off, hear me? You won’t get a penny from me!” Olivia cried out.
Sandra ran out from the house in search of the only safe place she knew: her aunt’s house.
“Aunt Linda!” She cried when she entered. “Please help me, please don’t throw me out!”
Linda seemed puzzled. “Throw you out?” She asked, puzzled. “Why on earth would I throw you out?”
“I’m pregnant…” Sandra admitted shyly. “I have committed a sin… I got kicked out of my mom’s house. Please help.”
“Of course I will help!” cried Linda. “You’re going to stay with us until your mom comes to her senses! You and your child will be more than welcome.”
“Aunt Linda…” Sandra asked timidly. “What if there is no baby? I have a friend in school who… didn’t keep hers. It’s a sinful child, it’s a child of disgrace…”
Linda took her niece by the hand and gently said: “Look at me, Sandra. That child is YOUR child. Your child can never be a sin or a disgrace. It is an innocent baby, a creation, a gift. You are a believer, aren’t you?”
“Yes” – Sandra whispers.
“Having a child is always your choice, but I also want you to think about another 17-year-old girl who was unmarried and pregnant: Jesus’ mom, Mary. Mary must have been just as scared as you are when the angel visited her, but she never for a second thought she wouldn’t have the child. She stood firm in the face of her parents and Joseph.”
“She told them that the baby is a precious gift from God and defied anyone who thought she was sinning, knowing that the real sin would be to deny the miracle God had performed in her life.”
“I never realised what Virgin Mary must have gone through.” Sandra said. “Life must have been even tougher for her… You are right Aunt Linda. This is indeed my child and if you help me…”
“There is no ‘if'” Linda replied determinedly. “I will help you and so will your mom, if she comes to her senses”
But as it turns out, Olivia had no intention to forgive her daughter. One of the first things she did after Sandra left was to call her attorney and prepare a new will in which she disinherited her daughter and also any potential grandchildren from her vast fortune.
Two days later she went to her church and confided in her pastor. She told him the whole story and cried bitterly: “My own flesh and blood, a sinful woman! I kicked her out and cut her out of my will! I will never ever forgive her for what she has done!”
“Oh, Olivia..” the pastor said quietly. “So much anger in your heart! You, a true believer, know that there was an unmarried mother in the Bible who found solace and support in her family. Do you think that when Virgin Mary told her parents that she was expecting the Saviour, they kicked her out?”
“And perhaps it was hard for them to believe that the child was conceived sinless. But they gave their child all the love and support she needed, and thus they found salvation. How can you, who claim to believe in Jesus’ message of love and forgiveness, do less?”
“Please love your daughter Olivia and give her and this precious child she will bring into the world, all the love and support they need. You will see that this baby will be God’s gift.”
By the time the pastor finished his sermon, Olivia was in tears. She went home and spent the night on her knees, praying and questioning her own righteousness.
Two days later, Sandra received a letter from her mother, and the attached documents confirmed that her mother had transferred all her money to her daughter.
The letter said: “Dear, all I want is for you and your baby to have everything you need. You will be a wonderful mom. I hope you can forgive me.”
Sandra dropped the letter and rushed home. When Olivia opened the door, Sandra hugged her crying: “I love you mom, I am so sorry for disappointing you…”
“No, my love”, Olivia replied. “I was the one who let you down. But I promise, from now on I will be there for you and the baby.”
During delivery, Olivia was there all along, holding her hand, and she became the most caring grandma for her grandchild, David.
